Paul Nation’s Four Strands solves a common mistake: doing too much of one activity and calling it learning.
The four strands are:
- Meaning-focused input
- Meaning-focused output
- Language-focused learning
- Fluency development
A practical weekly distribution
Use a simple target: around 25% attention per strand across the week.
You do not need perfect symmetry. You need balance over time.
What each strand looks like in VocaLearn
- Input: capture useful phrases from reading and listening.
- Output: write or speak through a real idea, then mark breakdowns.
- Study: inspect collocations, register, and form when repairing language.
- Fluency: retrieve known expressions in short timed sprints.
Fast weekly checklist
- Did I capture from real input?
- Did I log at least one real breakdown?
- Did I repair with precision, not just grammar?
- Did I retrieve repaired language in a later session?
If one answer is “no,” that strand is underweight.
